Pitney
Bowes Receives ISO 14001 Certification
Pitney's Danbury Facility is its First in the
U.S.
STAMFORD, Conn., Thursday, December 11, 2003
- Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE:PBI) announced today
that its Document Messaging Technologies (DMT) facility,
located in Danbury, Conn., has received ISO 14001 certification
for its Environmental Management System (EMS). The registration
was issued by BSI, an accredited third party registrar
for the International Standard Organization (ISO). With
this certification, Pitney Bowes has demonstrated its
EMS program has conformed to ISO standards for effectively
managing, controlling and documenting the DMT facility's
impact on the environment.
"This
program, which began nearly two years ago, is a significant
achievement in Pitney Bowes' efforts to consistently
improve our impact on the environment and to benefit
business operations," stated Amy C. Corn, vice
president, Secretary and Chief Governance Officer, Pitney
Bowes. "As we expand our global reach, we are proactively
making sound investments in environmental management
systems that can positively impact those areas where
we do business. In addition to the Danbury EMS program,
Pitney Bowes supports the development of environmentally
friendly renewable electricity by purchasing renewable
energy credits equivalent to 10% of it's U.S. and U.K.
home office electricity consumption. The company has
been recently recognized by the U.S. EPA as one of its
WasteWise program's Partner of the Year for excellence
in solid waste reduction."
The
EMS Planning team, along with over a dozen employees
from across the Pitney Bowes enterprise, worked throughout
2002 and 2003 to identify nearly 80 of the facility's
activities that would have an environmental impact -
all of which were evaluated and scored. The activities'
impacts were then reviewed and ranked, and top priorities
formed the basis of an improvement plan. The improvement
plan defined objectives and targets to be addressed
by the business. Key objectives addressed included:
- Reducing
paper consumption
- Reducing
Facility Energy Consumption
-
Reducing Non-Reusable Incoming Packaging
-
Utilizing Environmentally-Preferable Paper Procurement
Practices
- Ensuring
compliance with packaging rules and regulations
- Expanding
product stewardship opportunities with respect to the
product's end of life
- Improving
product stewardship opportunities with respect to product
design and development
